Special Luncheon - After church July 24th

A sneak peek of the menu: garden green salad, home made buns with sandwich fillings, sushi, salad kebabs, cherry cheesecake, blueberry and strawberry shortcake, blueberry cake, fruit, home made lemonade.....and so on. Please tell everyone, we'd like a good turnout.

We are asking for donations, to help our church get through the summer, considering that we are $27,000 in debt. This is unacceptable and unnecessary, and we're calling this fund "The Noah Fund: keeping our church afloat".

Please pass the word.

Host Families required for visiting Japanese students

Six students from Japan are coming here July 30th to August 8th who do not yet have host families to stay with in Whitehorse. A total of 12 people are coming -- 11 students and one chaperone. (More information in the newsletter)

Please see the note in the newsletter about it, but the short version is that there are times available this week and next week to have your pictures taken. It's a family album and we'd really like it to be as complete as possible, so even if you don't like having your picture taken, or don't need one, please consider participating so that we can have a full family album.

'Joyful Noise' Leaders

All those who will consider teaching Sunday school for a unit (4, 5 or 6 weeks) beginning in the fall, please be advised that there will be a meeting Wednesday Aug 24th at 7 pm . At that time you will be introduced to the curriculum, have questions answered, and choose the times when you are willing and available to lead.

United Church Observer

Subscriptions can now be renewed for 2011. Renewals, or any new subscriptions must be paid by February 14th to the office, or clearly marked on your offering envelope. The subscription is $20.00.

Thursdays at 7:15 am. Please note the change of day.

Choir Practices

Our choir has weekly practices on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. New voices are always welcome. So if you have that desire to share in worship through music, please join us. You don't need to be musically trained, but being able to carry a tune is important.

Beginning the first week of November until December 12th, the choir will be rehearsing for its annual Christmas Cantata - a special pre-Christmas service of Carols and Lessons. We invite anyone interested in joining the choir for that time period to come to our early practice, beginning at 7:00 pm prior to our regular choir practice time.

Mitten Drive

A different type of mitten drive! The Outreach Van has received a donation of mitten shells and fleece liners. They are looking for 'stuffers' to match the pairs. If you can help, call Jen Freeman at Many Rivers at 667-2970 (ext. 240).

Confirmation Classes

At some point Bev would like to offer confirmation classes. This might also include baptism preparation (for adults or young people), people who are thinking of transferring membership from another denomination or simply people who would like a chance to talk about faith. We have no idea if there is interest, and if there is, when would be a good time?. Please talk to Bev about this. We would anticipate a six week series.

Call for Proposals - Music & Training Fund

There is money available from the Herb and Dorreene Wahl Memorial Music and Training Fund. Two types of projects are eligible for funding: General Training and Music Training. Both need to show a benefit to Whitehorse United Church or its members.

If you have an idea which might be able to use this money please get in touch with Bev or the following people:

For General Training: Mark McCullough and/or Vanessa Thorson
For Music Training: Jennifer Moorlag, Sue Edelman, Derek Yap, or Carl Rumscheidt

An Application Form must be filled out for your proposal and can be dropped of at the Church Office.

Still looking for a Treasurer

The position of Treasurer is still open for someone who enjoys working with numbers and finances. If you have this skill set, please consider if this might be a place where you can put your faith into action in the life of our church. The Treasurer must be a member of the church.

Soup Kitchen

We are in need of soup for the soup kitchen. There are buckets at the church for you to use – please pick up a bucket (or two) and fill it up. Thanks so much.

Our church is responsible for soup kitchen at Sacred Heart Cathedral on the 2nd Sunday and 4th Saturday of every month. Again, another opportunity to put your faith into action. Please check the bulletin board in the Church narthex for details and team leaders.

Special Music during Worship Services

If you would like to share your gift of music with the congregation during worship, please speak to Barry. All musicians are welcome to share their gifts!

Scripture and Minute-for-Mission Readers

Please sign up on the back bulletin board - no experience necessary! Pat, our church administrator, will call with readings. There is also a special sign up sheet for young readers.

Social Justice Committee

We are collecting personal hygiene items, water bottles, backpacks, socks, mitts, gloves and hats for local Outreach programs. Collection bins are inside the front door of our church. Thanks!!
