Men's Breakfast - March 3rd

The next Men's Breakfast is on March 3rd, 7:00 am, at the Church of the Northern Apostles on Boxwood Crescent in Porter Creek.

Pancake Supper a Success!!

The pancake supper was a success. Mary Lou reports over 40 helpers in all, and that the amount raised was $1,442.05. The proceeds will go to Haiti relief. Thanks to everyone who helped.

Worship Service During Lent

A simple format of music, silence, and readings. Even though we are not having an Ash Wednesday service (this year) there are services in other churches and we encourage you to begin Lent by attending one of those

Lenten Bible Study

During Lent there will be two scheduled Bible Study times:

Mondays - 5:15pm to 6:00 pm, and

Tuesdays - 7:15 am to 8:00 am (Breakfast - muffins & tea)

Call for Proposals - Music & Training Fund

There is money available from the Herb and Dorreene Wahl Memorial Music and Training Fund. Two types of projects are eligible for funding: General Training and Music Training. Both need to show a benefit to Whitehorse United Church or its members.

If you have an idea which might be able to use this money please get in touch with Bev or the following people:

For General Training: Mark McCullough and/or Vanessa Thorson
For Music Training: Jennifer Moorlag, Sue Edelman, Derek Yap, or Carl Rumscheidt

$13,000 is available. Please start thinking about how we could use this money and run your ideas past these people.

An Application Form must be filled out for your proposal and can be dropped of at the Church Office.

Still looking for a Treasurer

The position of Treasurer is still open for someone who enjoys working with numbers and finances. If you have this skill set, please consider if this might be a place where you can put your faith into action in the life of our church. The Treasurer must be a member of the church.

Sourdough Rendezvous Church Service - February 28th

We will be celebrating our heritage with traditional Gospel music and traditional language for the Sunday service on February 28th. Come in period costume, if you are comfortable.

Observer Magazine Subscriptions

Subscriptions are due for renewal by February 14th for the United Church Observer magazine. If you wish to renew your current subscription, or if you wish to begin a new one, you may include the annual subscription fee of $20 with your envelope offering (clearly marked), or contact Pat at the church office.

Reverend Bev - On course and Holiday in February

Bev will be away on course and on some well-deserved holiday time from Feb 1 to 17. She will be available through email during that time if you use this address: bcsbrazier@live.ca.

Book Club - Update

Anyone is most welcome to join us, or simply to read along with us whether or not you attend meetings. The book is Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky, and we’ll meet to discuss it on the last Wednesday of each month at 6:30. The first meeting will be Wednesday, February 24th at the church, in the upper room.  We’ll take turns suggesting books, so that we get a broad range of material.

Joyful Noise needs help

Our Sunday School program, Joyful Noise, is looking for helpers. Even one Sunday would be helpful. There are several upcoming Sundays in which there are no leaders for the children K-2 and grade 3-5 .  Unfortunately, if we do not have a leader, the children will have to stay upstairs.  If you are able to help out please contact Kelly Pollard  at  333-0334. The curriculum being used is both helpful and complete.

We are also looking for folks who would like to share a specific skill or craft with the children, such as quilting, baking, carpentry, photography, etc., on a one-time basis. Contact Alison Farr-Furlong for details.

Share the Spirit - Update

Share the Spirit Final Update: Our church helped 35 children. Thanks to Norma Renwick for her work at coordinating this project for us! The total amount brought in was $2677.10. After expenses we donated back to Share the Spirit, 1,188.37.

Haitian Disaster Relief Efforts

The United Church of Canada has today (January 14, 2010) issued a press release on the Church's participation in the disastrous situation resulting from the devastating earthquake in Haiti. The press release can be viewed by clicking here.

Dessert Theatre

Bev would like to do a DESSERT THEATRE in the spring. What is needed: adults who are interested in reading through a script to see if they might be interested in this project. Please meet after church Sunday Jan 10th – and we’ll see if this is something we can do.

Soup Kitchen

We are in need of soup for the soup kitchen. There are buckets at the church for you to use – please pick up a bucket (or two) and fill it up. Thanks so much.

Our church is responsible for soup kitchen at Sacred Heart Cathedral on the 2nd Sunday and 4th Saturday of every month. Again, another opportunity to put your faith into action. Please check the bulletin board in the Church narthex for details and team leaders.

Christmas Cantata

Harris Cox taped the cantata on cassette and is making copies. If anyone would like a copy, contact him please. REQUEST: does anyone have the equipment to make a CD from a cassette?

2010 Church Calendars now available

The new United Church of Canada calendars are now in. The calendars feature photos of unique churches across Canada - ours being one of them.

The calendars are available at the Church office. Cost: $5

Scripture and Minute-for-Mission Readers

Please sign up on the back bulletin board - no experience necessary! Pat, our church administrator, will call with readings. There is also a special sign up sheet for young readers.

Social Justice Committee

We are collecting personal hygiene items, water bottles, backpacks, socks, mitts, gloves and hats for local Outreach programs. Collection bins are inside the front door of our church. Thanks!!
